What is SoundExchange?
SoundExchange is a non-profit, digital royalties collecting organization. SoundExchange collects royalties from digital use of music and distributes them to artists and labels. Typically, distributors collect royalties from DSP’s like Spotify, Apple Music etc, but SoundExchange tracks and monitors non interactive uses of sound recordings.
Non-interactive services are music services that don’t allow users to pick what they listen to directly. This includes web services like Pandora, radio plays and television plays.
Some quick facts about SoundExchange include:
- SoundExchange started as a division of the RIAA in 2000, helping artists receive correct royalty payouts for their work
- SoundExchange became an independent, non-profit corporation on September 22, 2003
- SoundExchange has nearly 155,000 members
- As of 2018, SoundExchange has paid out over $5B USD in royalties to artists and labels
SoundExchange is designated by the United States Librarian of Congress. The Library of Congress uses SoundExchange to collect various royalties paid by services creating ephemeral phonorecords and/or digital audio transmissions of sound recordings under certain statutory licenses.
