On February 7, The Weeknd performed at The Super Bowl Halftime Show, and like all other artists who perform, he did so for free.

The superbowl offers a $10 million production budget for the show with artists not getting any payment, but great publicity instead. An NFL executive once stated, “We’re putting someone up there for 12 and a half minutes in front of the largest audience that any television program garners in the United States. It’s a pretty good deal. It’s the famous win-win for both parties.”

In addition to the free performance, The Weeknd also laid down $7 million of his own money to complement the $10 million production budget given to his performance. This means that the Weeknd’s performance cost roughly $17 million dollars to turn into a reality.

Many people might see this as an unnecessary investment, but the Weeknd will most likely make a greater return on his investment due to the publicity from this performance, and his upcoming world tour which has many sold out dates already. The Super Bowl performance will most likely increase his ticket sales as well.
