On December 17th, a patent filed by Spotify was approved for “spoken word analysis” technology. The technology is an AI that functions to organize and analyze songs based on their lyrics and various other technical features.

The application for this patent was created on August 26th, 2020. The “spoken words analyzer” patent description is centered around a digital function that would evaluate a “plurality” of tracks and then locate “topics summarizing the lyrics” of the recording.

This technology will be used to help users find songs that better suit their mood and feelings. Along with that, the AI will also be trained to identify songs that have “explicit” lyrical content.

“Currently, music providers rely on the determination of the music producers to label certain tracks as explicit,” continues the nearly 50-page-long breakdown. “There exists a need for a flexible, automatic method for training a system to classify music as explicit or not, based on a sample set.”
