Meta's New Ad Share Program

Meta (formerly known as Facebook) has announced they will paying musicians and rights holders even more by directly sharing a portion of ad revenue from UGC videos.

Previously, publishers and labels were not receiving an agreed upon proportion for an artist’s music used on platforms such as TikTok and Meta. Meta is now the first company to address this problem by moving towards a “revenue share model” for user-generated content, similar to YouTube’s Content ID solution.

Simply put, money will now be paid out based on a direct share of money generated by an advertisement on Facebook and Instagram content. This will be paid out in tandem with the existing royalties generated from Facebook Rights Manager.

Now that Meta has implemented this new system, the question now is “Who is next?” Will Tiktok implement the same protocol?

At the end of the day, content creators (in this case musicians) are looking to be properly compensated for their work. As artists are attracted to the entity that will have the best payout, will their audience follow? This is a great move for Meta, and a step forward for musicians to start receiving proper payment for their work.
