Label Spotlight: Genius Distro

Genius is a entertainment and digital media company founded in 2009 by Tom Lehman, Ilan Zechory, and Mahbod Moghadam. The company’s initial and main purpose was to allow users to annotate and interpret lyrics, poetry, news stories and more. 

First launched as Rap Genius, the majority of their audience was mainly within the hip-hop genre, but by 2014 their popularity grew to the point where they started incorporating other genres like R&B and Pop amongst many other genres. By 2016, Genius started creating original content such as live events and artist lyric interviews, all of which is still being created by Genius today. 

From 2016 to 2022, Spotify had a partnership with Genius which allowed users to view “Behind the Lyrics” for a large number of songs on Spotify’s platform. This feature allowed Spotify users to follow along with the lyrics while also receiving facts and stories about the lyrics they are reading. 

Since they were founded over 12 years ago, Genius has become one of the most prolific and recognized brands in the music industry, with over two million contributors uploading information to their platform.
