Google Play Music is shutting down amid the launch of YouTube Music
Google Play’s music streaming service is shutting down.
Google has announced that starting in December 2020, Youtube Music will completely replace Google Play Music as the company’s music provider for all of it’s users. Google devices have already started switching their default music platform to YouTube Music, and have been warning users in the Google Play app that the DSP will be closing down completely.
Google-owned YouTube is one of the most popular brands for videos and music in the world, and by focusing their resources and energy towards building YouTube Music, Google can tap into an existing mass audience.
Here are some quick (and crazy) facts about YouTube:

- YouTube TV has 300,000 paying subscribers as of December 2018
- There has been over 50 million creators posting content to YouTube
- Over 5 billion videos are watched everyday, with 500 hours of new content being uploaded every minute (source)
- In an average month, eight out of ten 18-49 year olds watch YouTube videos
As of September 11, 2020, YouTube Music has already hit 500 million downloads on the Google Play app store.
While many users are pleased that the company will be using YouTube as their sole flagship streaming service, some users have expressed concerns. There have been many complaints regarding lengthy advertisements for unsubscribed users, and the lack of Google Play features - such as downloading music for a one time fee.
Artists on Too Lost will continue to receive their royalty payments from Google Play, even after the doors close in December. Too Lost users can also now deliver their releases to YouTube Music.
