Tidal is a digital music, podcast and video streaming service. It is a Norweigan-based company which offers lossless quality music, exclusive content and high definition music videos.

The streaming company was founded in 2014 by a company called Aspiro, but was bought by Project Panther Bidco in March of 2015. Project Panther Bidco focused on creating an image of “artist independence”, and got various high profile artists on board including Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Jack White, Daft Punk and more.

Some facts about Tidal include:

  • Until his 50th birthday, Jay-Z offered almost his entire catalog exclusively to Tidal
  • Tidal acquired deals with all three major record labels and many independent labels, allowing them to offer over 70 million tracks and over 250,000 music videos to their users
  • Tidal operates in over 55 countries and claims to have over 3 million users
  • Tidal pays an artist on average $.01284 dollars per stream, which is one of the highest royalty payouts amongst digital streaming platforms
  • Tidal exclusively releases albums, such as Lemonade by Beyoncé, The Life of Pablo by Kanye West, 444 by Jay-Z, and more high profile releases

Tidal offers various versions of two subscription plans: Premium and HiFi. The premium plan is free of ads, has unlimited listening time but does not offer lossless quality audio. This plan is also cheaper than the HiFi Plan. The HiFi Plan is a free of ads, provides unlimited listening time but includes streaming lossless quality audio.
