Artist Spotlight: YG
When discussing the top rappers from Compton, California, it is impossible to leave YG out of the conversation. Releasing albums such as “My Krazy Life”, “Still Brazy” and “4Real 4Real”, YG has cemented himself as a west coast legend.
In 2009 YG released his debut mixtape “4 Fingaz”. The 18-track project hosted by DJ Mustard featured songs such as “Pop Pillz”, “Up In The Club”, and “I’m YG” which all showcased his talent as an artist. The next year, YG released his follow-up mixtape “The Real 4 Fingaz” furthering his career and presence in the rap scene. YG even landed himself a cameo role in the movie Mac and Devin Go To Highschool featuring Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg.
On March 18th, 2014 YG released his debut album “My Krazy Life” which pushed him into the mainstream. The album had features from Drake, Rich Homie Quan, Jeezy, along with other artists. The album was a huge success. The song “Who Do You Love?” from the project is one of YG’s most popular songs to date with over 190 million streams on Spotify alone.
In July of 2015, YG started rolling out singles for his next album. Releasing “Cash Money”, “Twist my Fingaz” and “I want a Benz” featuring 50 Cent and Nipsey Hustle, fans were eagerly waiting for his next project. YG released his second studio album “Still Brazy” in mid-2016 and it lived up to the hype, receiving an 8/10 review on Pitchfork. In February of 2017, YG was featured on Mariah Carey’s song “I Don’t” and the two would go on to perform it on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
As time went on, YG still constantly put out quality projects. “Stay Dangerous”, “4Real 4Real”, “My Life 4Hunnid” and his most recent album “I Got Issues” all carry the same sound that fans and music listeners of all genres have come to love.
