Amazon Buys Wondery for $300 Million+
Wondery, a podcast organization that offers a wide variety of content, was just recently bought out by Amazon. Insiders have speculated that this deal could be worth over $300 million dollars.
The move by Amazon was in an attempt to expand their content horizon into the “spoken word” genre of podcasts. Spotify has been acquiring podcasts in their attempt to draw viewers to their platform for this type of content. For example, Spotify recently purchased the exclusive rights to the Joe Rogan podcast.
“We’re pleased to announce that Wondery – an innovative podcast publisher with a track record of creating and producing top-rated podcasts – has signed an agreement to join Amazon Music,” Amazon stated in a recent statement to the press. “With Amazon Music, Wondery will be able to provide even more high-quality, innovative content and continue their mission of bringing a world of entertainment and knowledge to their audiences, wherever they listen.”
Although purchased by Amazon, Wondery content will still remain available on Spotify and other services, despite the Amazon Music acquisition. “When the deal closes, nothing will change for listeners, and they’ll continue to be able to access Wondery podcasts through a variety of providers,” the press release continues.
Amazon is in fierce competition with companies such as Spotify and Apple Music to be the leader in not just music streaming, but podcast streaming as well.
